Red Tiger’s Beriched slot machine will have you donning a cloche and stirring potions if you play it. That’s not just a metaphor; the Recipe feature of Beriched (get it? bewitched?) is all about getting the right combination of symbols on the right reels to make them wild. It may come in useful, but occasionally I wonder if Red Tiger forgot an essential plant when they brewed Beriched and just used whatever they seemed to have on hand. While Beriched does have its moments of enchantment, they are few and far between, and the overall experience is one of strangeness and irritation.
Beriched, a slot machine with a castle theme, is played on a 5-reel, 4-row game panel with 20 fixed ways to win. Wax candles line the shelves and cast a pleasant glow over the reel set and room, but they don’t add any witchy atmosphere. The music is a nice touch to go along with the pleasant but unremarkable images. A pot of green slime boils over in a stone chamber lit by candles. The magic will, hopefully, be provided by the gameplay itself.
When identical tiles fall into adjacent reels from left to right, beginning at the panel’s left edge, the player is awarded a win. Potential is rather low, but Red Tiger has allowed wagers from 10 p/c on the low end to £/€40 each spin on the high end. The default theoretical return value for participants is 95.78%, and volatility is set rather high.
Line wins aren’t the only way to employ symbols in Beriched. As we’ll see, they may also be combined to produce recipes. Let’s take a brief look at the normal payouts first, where we find 10 of them: 5 low payments for ranks 10–A in cards, and 5 image premiums. Dolls, potion bottles, frogs, magic books, and green wizard/witch hats are some of the higher value symbols. Players can earn anywhere from 2x to 10x their wager if a win line with five premium symbols is hit.
Slot Functions; A Beriched Look
Beriched’s two most prominent features are free spins and the Recipes section. Each reel has a symbol beneath it that is chosen at random before a spin begins. The recipe is exactly what it sounds like. The Symbol Lock feature is activated when a symbol appears on a reel that is identical to the one below it.
In the next spin, any identical symbols will not move. If further matching symbols appear on the next spin, the Symbol Lock mechanism is activated again. All locked symbols are made available again if no additional matching symbols fall throughout the sequence.
If you get one symbol on each of the five reels, you’ve got the whole set of ingredients. For the remainder of the spin, any identical symbols replace themselves with wilds, and the recipe pattern disappears. The following spin will include a different recipe pattern when the outcome has been determined. In addition to being worth 15 times the wager when they occur in a winning line, this is the only time wild symbols appear in the game.
When you get three scatters on reels 1, 3, and 5, you’ll receive 10 free games. The formula is carried over to the free spins bonus and stays there for the duration. At the conclusion of the initial free spin, before win lines are paid out, any locked paying symbols from the triggering spin become wilds. If the bonus round is activated and the recipe is completed on the same spin, the wilds will carry over to the free spins and a new recipe will emerge. Any further matching symbols that appear during the bonus round will instantly become wild. Furthermore, wilds are fixed in place during the bonus game. Since free spins do not have any Scatter symbols, they cannot be retriggered.
Slot Verdict, a Beriched
After the unexpected pop-culture extravaganza that was NFT Megaways, Red Tiger is back where it belongs: Beriched. It’s as if the studio showed off its muscles, proved to everyone that it was capable of extreme creativity, and then settled back into neutral. With its attractive visuals, clinking gold payline item, and original function, Beriched is instantly recognizable as a Red Tiger product. Overall, Beriched serves its purpose, but it lacks any real excitement. Furthermore, the Recipe Feature shines brightly when a cluster of wilds fills the screen, but tends to sputter badly otherwise.
Playing Beriched for a time gives the impression that it might have been scrapped under different conditions, allowing the development team to focus on other ideas. The Recipe function fully materializes during free spins but can be a major hassle otherwise. The biggest problem is that everything appears to get in the way till you finish the dish. Pay symbols are extremely effective in stopping the action on the reel they are stuck to.
For instance, a series of spins may load many reels with the same symbol, but this might be problematic for chaining wins together if the symbols are of various sorts. It’s fine if they go completely berserk once you finish the recipe. However, they typically merely end up blocking each other. Given that identical symbols always turn wild during free spins rather than canceling each other out, here is when the pot really begins to boil. Sticky wilds can result in consecutive wins, which is funny, but the game’s maximum payout is only 2754 times the wager.
When everything is put together, Beriched is just an average game. Sticky wilds during free spins are a nice perk, but otherwise the drawbacks are far more glaring than the benefits. Some people could be really into Beriched, while others would think it’s more like a parlour trick than anything David Copperfield could do, like soaring over the Grand Canyon.
